What is in your heart? One writer reported that we ought to “keep our hearts with all diligence for out of it flow the issues of life” (1). What does the ebb and flow of content that moves in and out of your heart look like? What issues – chronic and acute – have you faced due to the nature of your heart?
Logistically, you’re dealing with the movement of information traveling to and from your heart. You’re navigating what is being written upon the “tables of your heart” (2) and being encoded on your heart.
This suggests that what our hearts become is not a completely a random event. We are the gatekeepers of what is allowed to consume our hearts. This does not connote that things will not happen or that we can control how others treat us. What it does suggest is that we have the responsibility to not allow negative and carnal experiences to dominate our hearts.
We also have control over how we treat ourselves. We have control over what we entertain and consume. What you entertain visually, verbally, intellectually, or emotionally does influence the nature of your heart.
This responsibility is critical. The heart is innately vile and unstable (3). If we do not keep it and guard what it is exposed to, consumes, and holds on to, it will have no limitations to what it can and will destroy
