Jesus’ response to Peter’s declaration of commitment was “…you will deny me…” (Mt 26:34).
I believe Peter’s response is the response of most of us. We will chirp up with boastful retorts filled with our love and devotion to Christ the King. We are fully aware of what He has done for us. Our souls are fully aware of how He has saved us from the wretched nature of our being. Our hearts are fully aware of its darkness prior to conversion and the challenge to sustain conversion.

It is this awareness that anchors our soul to unwavering committal statements. As my parents and guardians of my youth would say, “…your mouth is going to write a check your behind cannot cash…”. With these lips in our passion for Christ we declare commitments, vows, and promises.
Then, the storms of life come. Challenges come. Pressures come. Loss comes. Gains come. Success comes. The ebb and flow of life’s tides come and all our promises, convictions, and commitments to Christ are challenged.
Loving others is challenged. Loving our spouses is challenged. Being accessible to our sons and daughters is challenged. Knowing when to work more or less is challenged. Being good stewards is challenged. All we have is challenged and we have to know that we, like Peter, have denied Jesus.
It is never, about IF the denial is going to happen. It is always about will you recognize it, accept that you did it, and use the moment as opportunity to connect deeper and closer with the Lord.
